Actos® (pioglitazone) is used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise to treat Type 2 diabetes. This medication works by controlling a patient’s blood sugar levels and prevents the liver from making more sugar when it is unnecessary. Actos® is not designed to treat Type 1 or juvenile diabetes.

In June of 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a safety warning to health care professionals and patients that taking this medication for more than a year increases the risk of developing bladder cancer. This warning was in response to a 10-year study that revealed a 40 percent greater risk of developing bladder cancer for those taking Actos® for an extended period. A mere week before the FDA released this warning, the health agencies in Germany and France banned the pharmaceutical because of its connection to bladder cancer.

If you have taken Actos® for Type 2 diabetes and you suspect you may have bladder cancer, talk to your doctor and then consult the advice of a Montana Actos® injury attorney to learn about your options.

Actos and Bladder Cancer

When detected early, bladder cancer is treatable. Surgery may be conducted to remove the cancerous growth or part of the bladder. Chemotherapy can help kill the cancerous cells; while immune system-boosting medications can also help your body fight the disease and help prevent a relapse.

Aside from complications from the disease, different forms of treatment can also cause complications. If part of the bladder or the complete bladder must be removed, your body needs another way to store urine before it is eliminated. Your surgeon must then perform a procedure to create another receptacle for urine.

If it is not detected early, bladder cancer can become deadly by spreading to other parts of the body, such as the:

  • Pelvic lymph nodes
  • Bones
  • Lungs
  • Prostate
  • Rectum
  • Ureters (tubular structures carrying urine)
  • Uterus
  • Liver
